getting in yet another tangle about time

What would our minds be like if the sun didn't rise and set each day?
I know, i know, it's really the earth turning, and we wouldn't have gravity etc blah blah, you can work out all the details of how there could be such a situation.
All i'm wondering is, what would be our concept of TIME.  would we measure it by how fast we walked, or by the time it took a rock to fall from a cliff, the time it took a seed to sprout or a plant to grow?  
We think ahead in series of days. 
Maybe we'd invent clocks even without having had sundials and stonehenge?  No we don't have the stars either, that's cheating.  No seasons.  Ok so what is time then?  
Meet me when the.... What is 'when'
Yipes.
Do we only have time because the earth turns relative to other stuff in the universe?

a grant to watch hoses

i'm thinking it would be of great value to the human race for someone to get a grant to study hoses.  to set up cameras to film them full time.  not just hoses, but electtrical cords, strings of xmas lights, string, skeins of yarn, ribbons, you know what i'm talking about!
maybe it should be crowd sourced, camera kits could be given out and the citizens of the world could record the storage of these items.  
we will never know WHY they become entangled, unless we learn to communicate with them, but we can at least seee how they do it and when.  do they entangle just when you go to get them, or just when you store them, or slowly over time.
or, oh dear, perhaps like that poor cat in a box, they only entangle if they are not being watched, in which case the camera surveillence would be a waste of time.
but wait!  maybe not!  then we would know how to keep them neat... just never leave them unobserved!

i love this quote...  it got me through xmas this year.  so often Garrison Keillor is not at all what people think he is...  he is totally not from Mayberry. but we do all go through it together even if we are going through it by ignoring it or rejecting it.

the dangers of peanuts

you know that song "found a peanut?"
what's with that?
when i was a kid the common belief was that if you ate a bad peanut you'd die.
back then i never heard of anyone actually dying from eating a peanut.

but now it seems it does happen, and it's frightening.
not from rotten peanuts, but from deadly peanut allergy.

i wonder if that's how the song came about?  and people just blamed a bad peanut.
blech i've eaten bad peanuts sometimes you get one in a bunch, i conjure up the yucky taste just thinking about it.

making sense of parties

something i read the other day has stuck in my mind.
an explanation of traits of introverts vs extroverts.
the part that stuck was about parties.
it said that introverts go to parties looking forward to spending time with people they know.
extroverts go to parties looking forward to meeting new people.

that stopped my mind.
going somewhere with the idea of looking forward to meeting new people. i cannot wrap my mind around that idea.
but looking back at the behavior of some of my friends, i can see it now!
it all makes sense!  they look forward to meeting new people.

is this obvious and i just missed it all these many years, that such a thing was common and not a weird affectation of a few people i knew?

i wonder what that's like?  i wonder if i could try it?

HAIR as it should be

youtube has a video of GWU performing HAIR -- the real HAIR!

if you've heard the soundtrack or saw the movie, you couldn't guess what an uproar HAIR caused. 
it went all the way to the supreme court! 
frontal nudity, obscenity, flag desecration for starters. 
banned in Boston and nearly everywhere else in the world, too. 
(i did manage to see it in Boston the one pre-opening performance before it shut down).

the movie of HAIR is cleaned up and has good music and beautiful people, but it just doesn't have the raw energy, joy of life and in-your-faceness that make the real thing so thrilling. not to mention the missing songs.

HAIR's the explosive expression of a dream of a better world of love, joy, and beauty, back when the government was trying to kill us, before iphones, before AIDS, 'the pill' was new, before women realized...well, but you know all that.

the GWU performance on youtube is like going to the theatre and having really bad seats for a really good show. 
even so, it's wonderful to see it as it should be, young, raunchy, rude, crude, defiant, youth in love with life, body, self, and each other.  
the music is great, especially if you already know the words. i wish their audio-visual department had been up to par with their theater department!

why is this film blank?

we've been wondering if vampires show up on film. 

this wasn't an issue in bram stoker's day, and i don't know if anne rice ever addressed it.  but i was sure google would show me the consensual reality here.

HOWEVER it turns out to be a complicated question!

what kind of camera?  does it rely on a mirror?

-- which leads to the whole problem of vampires and reflections.  it turns out that there are theories on that too -- is it light bending, or is it mind-clouding?  or is it just a myth (LOL), some scientific minded folks say if a vampire is corporeal, it will reflect light and therefore cause reflections.  HAH

then there's digital vs film.

if you want to amuse yourself for say 10 minutes, just google "do vampires show up in pictures."

whatever the TRUE ANSWER is, i will still avoid looking at mirrors at night.

Frustro the typeface was a jolly happy soul

if i meet someone who is involved in anything related to printing, i ask them about Comic Sans.
i do this because i like Comic Sans.
the answer is always the same
"DON'T USE IT."
so mostly i don't.
jeez.

here's a bit of an interesting font.. or typeface as they call it (is it not the same?) named of "Frustro" !

it reminds me of that thing i first saw in Mad Magazine, (and subsequently drew many times during the looong loong days of school) -- which later was called a blivet, even tho that word used to mean something quite stinkier.

luckily there is the World Wide Web so i followed the trail to -- ta da! - Wikipedia, which thinks it might be something like "In its most common usage, the word "blivet" refers to an indecipherable figure, illustrated above.[citation needed] It appeared on the March 1965 cover of Mad magazine, where it was dubbed the "Three-Pronged Poiuyt" (the last six letters on the top row of many Latin-script typewriter keyboards, right to left), and has appeared numerous times since then. An anonymously-contributed version described as a "hole location gauge" was printed in the June 1964 issue of Analog Science Fiction and Fact, with the comment that "this outrageous piece of draftsmanship evidently escaped from the Finagle & Diddle Engineering Works" (although something else called a "hole location gauge" had already been patented in 1961)"

Frusto was apparently inspired by the Penrose Triangle, which i never heard of but recognized when i googled it. Frustro seems not to be available as a computer font.
